The Level 2 Advanced Wine Appreciation course is designed to create an understanding of viticulture, vinification of wine and the main internationally renowned wine regions, climates, varieties, winemaking styles and quality classifications. Students will take part in tutored tastings, learning advanced techniques to evaluate and rate wines.

It is suitable wherever a good level of wine knowledge is required to underpin job skills and competencies, for example in the customer service and sales functions of hospitality, retailing and wholesaling industries. It is also useful for those who have a general interest in wine and wish to broaden their knowledge.

Who Is This Course For?

The Level 2 Advanced Award in Wines is intended for people who have little or no prior knowledge of wines.

Completion of this comprehensive course aimed at Senior Steward level yacht crew will give students the basic expertise on factors affecting quality, style and price, key wines of the world, professional service, and an understanding of food and wine pairing.

Course Structure

The course is structured into specific learning outcomes to provide participants with practical knowledge and experience, as well as theory.

Successful candidates will be able to describe and compare the styles of wines produced from internationally and regionally important grape varieties, interpret wine labels from the main wine producing regions of the world and give basic guidance on appropriate selection and service, as well as understand the principles of wine tasting and evaluation.

Course Duration

TQT (Total Quality Time) is an estimate of the total amount of time, measured in hours, that a learner would reasonably need to be able to show the level of achievement necessary for the award of a qualification. It is made up of GLH (Guided Learning Hours) and private study time. GLH includes all tutor-supervised learning and supervised assessments.

The TQT for the Level 2 Advanced Wine Appreciation is 28 hours. This is made up of 17 GLH (of which 1 hour is for the examination) and 11 hours’ private study. The course takes place over 2 days.

On completion of the course, students will have a broad knowledge of the following:

Factors affecting quality, style and price of wines
Main varieties, blends and styles of wines around the world
Main geographic areas, climates and terroirs of top wines
How to read wine labels and assess geographic Indications of quality
How to assess wine through sensory evaluation techniques
Basics of wine serving and temperatures
The ability to be able to effectively discuss and assist guests with wine choices
