People have often asked me why salmon is good for you, and besides the logical answers that fish is high in protein and natural oils, there are a few other interesting facts about salmon.
Fish and shellfish are nutrient-dense and salmon is no exception. It is an excellent source of high-quality protein, vitamins and minerals, including potassium, selenium and vitamin B12. However, it is the content of omega-3 fatty acids in salmon that receives the most attention.
Omega-3 is termed as an essential fatty acid because the body cannot synthesise it, so it must be obtained from the diet. Omega-3 fatty acids have also been shown to reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure and decrease risk factors for disease. This places salmon squarely into the ‘superfood’ category, as it is also a valuable source of ‘brain food’.
Unfortunately, salmon has become hideously expensive in South Africa due to the high demand for sushi, but one need not eat large quantities to get your fix.
We’ve added a delicious salmon recipe for you this week.
